November 2017: Faculty Member Comments on Voluntourism

Dr. Andrea Freidus has recently written an article for The Conversation critiquing the practice of volunteer tourism, especially among orphans and vulnerable children. While the practice is problematic, she argues that reframing these trips with a focus on cultural understanding and exchange as opposed to “helping” and “saving” others could be fruitful in expanding our compassion and acceptance of others.
